The Alums are playing all weekend at Dad Perry Park. Due to past shenanigans, the club division is unaffiliated with the college. Hopefully, that won't degrade the usual high level of play.

The Z's finally took the field in 2013 and began the season on a positive note, placing second at Huck Finn in St. Louis.
The weather conditions were not favorable this weekend. On saturday the primary fields were rained out and play did not begin on the back up fields until noon. We entered the tournament seeded 7th overall and second in pool B. The Zontals played 5 games to 11, going 5-0 in pool play beating:
Texas State 11-7
Illinois B- 10-1
Illinois A (the 1 seed in our pool) - 10-5
SLU - 11-4
A strong saturday assured us a first round bye into quarterfinals where the winner of Luther-Iowa would await us.
Sunday morning weather was even worse. Rains of biblical proportions reduced the fields to nothing more than oversized mud pits, where a layout ensured you would slide the full 40 yard width of the field. The rain was coupled with gusty winds and a frigid cold reminiscent of the last ice age. We began in Quarterfinals against Luther. Strong Zontal D, muddy layouts and a harassing zone allowed us to take a large lead into half. Keeping the foot on the gas the Zontals earned a quality 15-9 win.
In semis Northern Iowa awaited. As the wind died down the zone became less effective. The game was very back and forth, but after half Northern Iowa had a two point lead and we were down one of our captians to an ankle injury. Regardless the right before cap the Z's scored 3 straight points to earn a hard fought 9-8 victory and secure a spot in finals.
The finals game weather was no different than the rest of the day and sectionals rival Missouri was eager to play. Mounting injuries along with the weather, we convinced them to cut the game down to 11 points. While we didn't win this game, many of our rookies and younger players got great experience and work at new positions, allowing others to rest and work on their team skills on the sideline.
All in all it was a successful weekend for the Big Red Z. We are looking to build on this success as we progress to the series. Up next is Centex this weekend (3/16-17), so stay tuned! Thanks for all your support and love Zontal Nation!
