Winter Update

Zontal Nation,
Happy holidays! The Zboyz wish you a happy New Year, and good fortune for 2013!

Even though we were more than happy to go home and celebrate the holidays, the Zboys are hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. It might be 20 degrees in KC, or 8 degrees in the twin cities, but the boys are still hitting the pavement. Zontal Nation, words of encouragement are greatly needed! That one sentence text from an Alum is the extra inspiration some of us Zboyz need to finish the last hundred, or hit that last set. We don't want to let the Zontal Nation down. A healthy reminder can only help!

Our tournament schedule is probably going to look like this:
February 23-24 - Free State Classic in Overland Park, KS
March 16-17 - Centex in Austin, TX
March 23-24 - Either Chicago Invite in Chicago, IL OR Terminus in Atlanta, GA

You're probably taking a look at this and saying, "These chodez booked two important tournaments back to back!" and in that case, you're right. The college season has become condensed into 9 weeks, so we are having to compensate getting into specific tournaments with playing back to back weekends. In the words of a wise man, "Time to nut up, or shut up."

If anyone lives in any of these cities, and would be willing to help the Zboyz keep their expenses down by allowing us to stay at your place for the weekend, please let us know! Contact me at if you're interested in helping out.

The boyz are excited to be back in the swing of the season, and much of that excitement stems from having an outrageous, passionate, tight-knit community like our Zontal Nation supporting us.

You'll be hearing from us, and we hope to hear from you!
Trent Kuhl

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Your Zboys came to Columbia, Misery with the mindset that success was our only option, and that it was time for us to make some long awaited noise. Saturday resulted in the boyZ going 4-0 for the day, beating Kenyon, Truman State, Iowa State in pool play, and then defeating Iowa 13-7 in the crossover game. With more on the day, here's Trent Kuhl with a quick recap:
And here is the recap for sunday:

That was the last tournament for the semester. We will fill you in on the spring semester schedule once we have it figured out.
Thanks for the support!

Manhattan Project

The Z-boys took two teams to Manhattan, KS for K-State's Manhattan Project this past weekend. You'll be proud to know that both teams made it to semi-finals, and were the only two college teams to do so. Both teams were ranked 2nd in both pools, and went 4-0 in Saturday's bracket play.

A memorable game include Team X's/Team Wetball's game against K-State. The Zs up 7-4 to take half, but The Huckstables quickly began to make a comeback, making the game 10-8 them as soft cap went off. The Z-boys held strong, and made 4 straight breaks to win the game.

Practices are going well. The rookies seem to be picking up the offense; they keep surprising all of the vets with many contributions and scores.

Our next tournament will be Harvest Moon in Fayetteville. If you plan on being in the area that weekend let your fellow Zboys know!

Club Sectionals

Hey Zontal Nation!
The Z boys took a team of 18 players to Club Sectionals this last weekend. The team consisted of all different types of Zontals. Zontal alumni that participated were Robbie Reynolds and Jack Colicchio. Jack was vital to the team's success this weekend with his famous flicks hucks, while Robbie was as elusive as ever with innumerable deep cuts and long scores.

Returning Zontals that participated were:
Asa Gotlieb
Charlie Rotter
Simon Gottlieb
Zach Hunter
Lucas Wallace
Stephen McKinney
Trent Kuhl
Nick Jackson
Brent Kimmi
Alex Zimmer
Ryan Tuschhoff

We also invited five new Zontals to play with us. Jason Fink and Sam Bumsted are both freshmen that recently graduated from Hopkins High School in Minnesota. Both were instant contributors not only on defense but at the handler position as well. Kyle Strickland, also a freshman, hails from the great state of Utah. His numerous D's on defense are more than enough to emphasize his impact in the teams success. Harrison Schieb is a junior transfer from Indiana Wesleyan University, where he ran both cross country and track. His athleticism was apparent with outrageous D's and some pretty remarkable skies on offense. Beau Atkinson is a junior student who has years of experience with KCU and summer league. It didn't matter where we put Beau; whether it was offense or defense, handler or cutter, Beau made great plays. Seamless continuations, playing shut down defense, and catching important scores are just a few of the things Beau did for the Zontals this weekend.

With most of us having not played together since May, the Z boys could only afford a few points to get used to playing with each other. And that's all it took. The Zontals went 1-2 in Pool play, with the win coming from a 9 point run in the second half to defeat Brick City. The first game of bracket play resulted in a loss to Nebraska Disc, but it was quickly redeemed with a win over Contra Black the next morning to advance to a game with City Park Ultimate.

Ben Keg's CPU team played well enough to secure a bid over the Zontals, which put the Z boys in a last minute bid rematch with Nebraska Disc. Heads started to turn as the Z boys stayed neck and neck with Nebraska Disc, eventually taking half 8-7. The game was decided on universe point when Nebraska Disc scored on a set play after their final timeout. Final score 13-12.

The West Plains section definitely took notice of this new crew of Z Boys. One thing was certain and made clear at the end of the tournament: Come around spring, Beware of the Z.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more updates!

Great Season

We want to give a HUGE shout out to all of the Zontal alums that came and watched us at regionals this weekend. This season wouldn't have been close to as fun without you guys showing up and supporting us. No other college team in the nation that has the support that we do, so we consider ourselves lucky to be following in your footsteps.

For all the graduating guys out there, you're the fucking best. Not only did you turn this team around, but you established a premier program for following Zs to adopt. Go out and kick ass, and don't forget about your bros back home who have your back at all times.

Great season everyone. We'll see you in a couple months!

The Zs won their pool solidly, but lost to Colorado in the semis. Cramps to key players and redzone miscues contributed to a 12-7 loss.

Sectionals 2012 (Saturday)

Zs started the morning as the third seed in their pool. By afternoon, they had taken it over with a 4-0 record.  No video recaps for today. My camera screwed up.

Saturday's opponents: MU, Arkansas, WashU, SW Mo State

Championship game vs. K-State at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

And so it has begun. The greatest series of all time. Join us in the glorious fight of good vs. evil; Zontals versus Chodez.  9 is the time for the commencement of laying waste to all that oppose us. The Kenneth Polo fields at 151st and Kenneth Rd will be coated red with the blood of our foes this weekend, and the jesting of alum at these games would be more than appreciated. Let it be known to all; Fear The D. And O. But preferably D.

Huck Finn 2012 (Sunday)

Sunday was a rollercoaster ride, with dizzying highs and disappointing lows. Our offense played some of the smoothest disc of the year, and the zone has never looked better. However, a slow start proved fatal to our dream of Huck Finn glory. Despite this, the Zontals rebounded from an early loss to claim 5th place.

Due to time constraints (KU bball), recaps were recorded on the drive home...

Coach Joe on Quarterfinals (SLU)

Da Coach again on 5th Place Semis (Northwestern)

And Joe Young wraps it up in style with 5th Place Game (Purdue)

JP on the first game of the day.

Frank on the second game of the day.

Nick on the third game of the day.

Trent on the fouth game of the day. He later told me he did his report in a "Bro-tips-syle homage to Brody Smith." The kids love that guy.

Dixey with the final game of the day.

Huck Finn

The boys in black and white will be at Creve Coeur County Park in Maryland Heights, Missouri this weekend for the Huck Finn Tournament. Saturday's opponents include St. Olaf, Northwestern, and lucky enough, Purdue. If you're in the area we would love it if you could stop by and give your Zontal players some support! Check out @Zontal_Ultimate on twitter to stay up to date with our scores of this weekends games!

The 31st incarnation of Fool's Fest will soon be upon us. Last year's 30th anniversary was a huge success, in large part because of the alumni who traveled from across the nation. While we may have lost some on Sunday to shrooms and the Dead, the weekend owes its success to them. #31 is sure to be a worthy successor and the current Z's can't wait for that alumni game (upset alert!)
March 31st - April 1st  2012 (Final Four Weekend)
Lawrence, KS
Shenk fields will host the men and women's college division
Dad Perry Park for the club Division
Game time hasn't been decided yet, but plan for around 9o'clock
Friday night
Festivities are still in the works and I will post more about that as we figure it out. Quinton's upstairs is a likely possibility
Saturday night
The Granada
Late Saturday night
1126 Kentucky St.
Once the Granada decides it can no longer handle us, the foolishness will move to John Dixey's lovely home. He'll bring da beers and maybe a dunk tank.

Again, I'm really looking forward to this weekend and I hope to see you all there. If there was any question left unanswered, please leave a comment here or I can be reached at 918-378-8062

Big Up Yourself

A quick shout-out and big ups to all the alum and friends that made it out to the Free State Classic this past weekend. Your presence and support on the sidelines makes the game all that much more enjoyable.

FSC 2012 (Sunday)

The Zontals were able to overcome injuries to 3 or 4 players and still go undefeated on Saturday, however, the body bags piled too high by Sunday. More than 10 players, most of them key players, were unable to play most, if not all, of Sunday. I've never seen anything near that many injuries take so many guys off the field in one tournament. This contributed to a 1-2 record in bracket play. On the plus side, many rooks and second year's got extended PT.

There may be a captain's write-up of the tournament coming in the next day or so.

For now, here's a video recap of our Sunday win by Brett Hidaka:

Here's a video recap of the next two games. Captain Joe Young is taking the bullet and will deliver the bad news:

And here are a some pics HnK (she's so hot and talented) took over the weekend:

Zontals Playing Free State Classic this weekend (Feb. 25-26, 2012)

The Zs are taking on some serious competition at Free State Classic this week. FSC is in the KC area on the baller turf fields at the Overland Park Soccer Complex - 13700 Switzer Rd, Overland Park, KS. Games start early and go into the afternoon both Saturday and Sunday. If you're in the area come check them out.

All the deets are at KCU's top notch website at

Zontals blog back in business

The Zontals blog is reborn. is the web address.

It's a blog for the current KU HorrorZontals to post what they are up to as a team so that alums and other interested parties can go to one place online for the next millennium to check in on the Z boyz. The blog has plenty of options for people to get updates sent to them each time the blog gets updated.

It also has info for alums to sign up for the zontals-alum listserv (great for organizing reunion teams or getting in touch with lost homies).
